capncap vs loom

loom made instant screen sharing normal: record, stop, send a link. capncap keeps that flow and changes what gets recorded — instead of baking your screen and camera into one fixed video, each source is captured as its own stream.

what's the same

record your screen and camera, stop, and the share link is ready. viewers watch in the browser, no account needed. visibility is yours to control: private, link-only, or public.

what's different

loom composes one video at record time — the camera bubble is burned in wherever it was. capncap uploads the screen and camera as separate streams, and the viewer composes them at watch time: picture-in-picture, side-by-side, screen only, camera only. the person watching picks, and nothing is ever baked away.

capncap is a native macOS app (SwiftUI + ScreenCaptureKit), not an Electron wrapper. recordings also capture a timeline of clicks, keystrokes, and window switches as data — which powers keystroke overlays and, for terminal windows, copyable commands in the shared page.

pricing

loom moved to per-seat subscription pricing under atlassian. capncap is free during development.

when loom is the better fit

you need windows or chromebook recording, team workspaces, or enterprise admin controls. capncap records on macOS 15+ only, and is built for individuals first.

try it

capncap is on the mac app store. record something, send the link, and let the viewer choose the layout.
